“I like to say that lighting is about taking the light away. I often like to use the shadows more than the light,”
~ Vilmos Zsigmond (voted among the ten most influential cinematographers in history)
Ever since I began to capture life through a lens, I have loved & appreciated the impact that light & shadow can have on an image.
At first, I thought it was light alone that I loved, but then I realised that without shadow, without the absence of light, light itself has no impact. It is shadow that assists in creating the beautiful compositions full of contrast, form & a captivating simplicity.
In music they say that the spaces between the notes are just as important as the notes themselves. Similarly, in photography it is the parts of the image in shadow that are just as powerful as the parts that catch the light.
Light & shade work together powerfully to create mood, capture emotion, enhance an image & add visual power to a photograph.
