Pregnancy is one of the most unique & special moments in a woman’s life.

A maternity photoshoot is the perfect way to capture the beauty & glow of this time. It’s a moment to celebrate the miracle of life & your journey into motherhood.

For most women, this is their first photoshoot experience, and during our preparation call, they will often mention that they feel a little apprehensive about being in front of the camera (which is totally understandable).

Let’s go through some tips to help you prepare:

Timing is Key

Maternity portraits are best captured between 27 – 36 weeks. (For moms carrying multiples, 25 – 30 weeks is recommended).
This is usually the ideal time as your baby bump will be prominent & you will feel at your best. After this time, the probability of swelling is high, you will become tired very quickly & find it more difficult to move around.
(The best time to get your shoot booked in is after your 20 week scan.)

Wardrobe and Styling

Choose outfits that accentuate your baby bump and make you feel confident & beautiful.
Some moms choose to capture tasteful, artistic nude or semi nude portraits while others opt for a little more cover – either fully clothed or outfits creatively exposing their belly.

Tips on preparing for your maternity shoot

When selecting fabrics, consider solid colors or soft patterns that complement your skin tone. Whatever your style & preferences are, there are plenty of beautiful options for clothing and posing.

A few great wardrobe options:

Maternity picture of a woman dressed in a black fitting dress.
A form-fitting dress that hugs all your beautiful curves, are perfect for silhouette shots.
Lace dresses, fabrics & robes. Lace gives an image a beautiful texture, dimension & femininity.
For those who want something a bit more casual but still stylish, boyfriend jeans are a perfect choice. They provide comfort without sacrificing style, & look great when paired with a fitted/bandeau top.
Maternity photoshoot with grey fabric.
Natural silks, chiffons, and flowing fabrics can be beautifully draped around you, used to cover up and be tossed for a bit of flare.

For a more polished look, pairing a blazer with pants can also be used creatively to show off your beautiful bump.
A bandeau top & maxi skirt. A perfect option if you don’t want to reveal too much but still want to show off your bump.

A maternity session is a celebration of you. It’s a time to embrace your beautiful bump. Your truly incredible body has transformed to grow & nurture a human life & that is worthy of being captured!

This is a great opportunity to pamper yourself by getting your hair & makeup done professionally.
For makeup, choose a natural & radiant look with an even skintone that enhances your features. (Avoid too much makeup, excessively dark eyeshadows and highlighting on skin).

Styling your hair will depend on what makes you feel most comfortable & beautiful. If you have longer hair, being ready to style it up in some way adds great variety to your images.

Schedule a mani-pedi a couple days before your shoot – soft, natural colors look beautiful, especially for close up shots of hands on your belly.

Involve Your Partner and Children

A maternity session is also an opportunity to celebrate the arrival of your baby as a family. Capturing your love & connection as you all anticipate the arrival of your little one, will hold special memories for years to come.
If you choose to involve your partner or children, setting aside a little time to consider everyone’s outfits makes the world of difference to the final images.
Choose outfits that are similar in style & compliment/tone in with one another (consider experimenting with textures).

Relax and Have Fun

The most important tip is to relax & enjoy your photoshoot.
